Published on August 11, 2005 under International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release
The sixth head coach in Mallards history is in place. Brian Curran was introduced as the team's new bench boss on August 3rd during a press conference at The MARK of the Quad Cities. Curran is a former NHL enforcer who has been named Coach of the Year in two different leagues. In 1999-2000, Curran capped his second year as a coach with the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) Coach of the Year Award. In 2002-03, he was named Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL) Coach of the Year. All told, the Toronto native is 176-137-28 in five seasons behind benches in the ECHL, WPHL and ACHL.
Curran accumulated 3,674 penalty minutes in 767 professional games from 1983-1998. Twice during his NHL career, he topped the 300 penalty minute mark. In 1986-87, he finished just five penalty minutes behind the NHL leader in PIMs. Curran rang up 356 minutes that year while skating with the New York Islanders. Curran spent 301 minutes in the penalty box with his hometown team (the Toronto Maple Leafs) in 1989-90.
Gherson Spends Week with Rangers Top Prospects
Mid-August is not usually an exciting time for hockey players. Goaltender Robert Gherson is the exception to that rule. Gherson earned an invitation to the Prospect Development Camp of the NHL's New York Rangers. The camp began on Monday and concludes on Saturday at the Madison Square Garden Training Center. The 2004-05 UHL All-Rookie Team netminder will be competing with the top prospects in the Rangers system including 2005 first round selection Marc Staal.
Gherson earned the invite after a very impressive rookie year in the Quad Cities. Last year, Gherson tied a franchise record with a save percentage of .925. His goals against average was a paltry 2.25, and he recorded 24 wins with just 12 losses and 7 shootout defeats.
