Brevard, St. Andrews Begin "Winter Games" at Asheboro's McCrary Park February 5th
January 25, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Asheboro Copperheads News Release
Baseball fans in the Asheboro area won't have to wait until the summer - or even the spring - to watch collegiate baseball at McCrary Park in 2011.
The Asheboro Copperheads will serve as the host to a couple of February matchups involving foes from North Carolina and New York and will welcome two more college teams from the Tar Heel state to town in early March.
NCAA Division II foes St. Andrews and Brevard will get the collegiate season under way on Saturday, Feb. 5 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Not only will it be the first games of the season for both the Carolinas Conference Knights and the South Atlantic Conference Tornados, but it will also mark the collegiate head coaching debut for both Matt Boykin of St. Andrews, who coached the Copperheads in 2005, and Matt McCay of Brevard. McCay is a former player and assistant coach at UNC-Chapel Hill who also formerly coached the Thomasville Hi-Toms of the Coastal Plain League. Former Copperhead Seth Williams, a UNC alum, is also on McCay's coaching staff at Brevard.
On Feb. 26-27, the "Big Apple" will be coming to Asheboro as a couple of New York City universities will make the long bus ride south for a three-game weekend series at McCrary. The Fordham Rams of the Atlantic 10 and the Iona Gaels of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference will play at doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 26 and a single game on Sunday, Feb. 27. The first pitch is scheduled for noon both days.
Winding up the winter collegiate action at McCrary on Wednesday, March 2, will be another South Atlantic Conference and Carolinas Conference Division II matchup - the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears and the Barton College Bulldogs. The Bears and the Bulldogs will play a pair of games, with the opener scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
"We're looking forward to bringing these college teams to Asheboro and McCrary Park," says Copperheads General Manager David Camp. "The fact that we now have a synthetic infield surface makes this a very desirable place for colleges to play early-season games. In the case of Fordham and Iona, both are going to be coming to Asheboro for the weekend, staying in hotels and eating at local restaurants. Hosting a weekend series like this is something we hope to do more of in the future because it benefits the entire community."
Asheboro is a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Heading into its 15th season with 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
