Two All-Stars Among Returning Copperheads
January 12, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Asheboro Copperheads News Release
Two of the four Asheboro Copperheads who were 2010 Coastal Plain League all-stars will be returning this summer, along with at least one other member of last year's team that reached the post-season.
Returning for the 2011 season will be second baseman Marquis Riley of North Carolina A&T and pitcher Corey Deighan of Charleston Southern, both all-star selections and key members of last summer's playoff team. The lefthanded-hitting Riley batted .301 for the season and led the team in total hits. A junior at A&T who hails from Hillsborough, Riley provided solid defense, helping the Copperheads rank second in the league in turning double plays. Deighan was the CPL's leader in saves with 17 and posted a 2.59 earned run average. Opponents managed only a .172 average against the junior righthander from Jacksonville, FL.
Also returning for a second season under head coach Donnie Wilson will be Riley's A&T teammate, Xavier Macklin. A junior from Rocky Mount, Macklin got off to a slow start in 2010 and was hampered by an ailing shoulder, but still managed to tie for the team lead in doubles, was second in stolen bases and third in RBIs. Macklin has belted 30 home runs in two seasons with the MEAC Aggies and in 2009 was selected first-team Division I Freshman All-America.
"We're pleased to have these three key players from last season returning," said Copperheads GM David Camp. "Marquis and Corey were not only outstanding performers on the field for us last season, but provided great team leadership and are the type of young men we love to have in our program."
"Marquis was solid from start to finish and gave us steady play at second," added Camp. "Corey played a huge role in helping us reach the playoffs with his clutch relief work throughout the summer. Xavier came on late in the season and got some key hits for us despite the fact he was nursing a sore shoulder that kept him from playing in the field. And he's the kind of kid you love to have - a hard worker and a team player with a great attitude."
Asheboro is a member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Heading into its 15th season with 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months.
