Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) – The first place Vero Beach Dodgers ran into a buzz saw Friday night at Holman Stadium as the Brevard County Manatees stifled Dodger bats in a 2-0 victory.

Rehabbing Double-A hurler RHP Gustavo Mata made the start for the Manatees, taking to the mound for the first time this season, but the rust did not show. The right-hander silenced the Dodger bats over seven innings, allowing only two hits and two walks, striking out eight to pick up the win.

Dodger starter RHP Clint Hosford (5-2) survived a rough first inning that saw him face eight batters and surrender two runs, leaving the bases loaded. He went on to throw six strong innings, allowing only the two tallies on eight hits, striking out four, but he failed to get any run support, taking the loss.

The only Vero Beach threat against Mata came in the fourth inning when back-to-back singles put runners at the corners with one out, but C Russell Martin hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

RHP Mayque Quintero relieved Mata and tossed a scoreless eighth, bridging the gap to LHP Bill Bray, who hurled a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The Dodgers and Manatees square off at 6:30 PM Saturday night at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach. The Dodgers will be using the game to help the American Red Cross meet the needs of Hurrican Charley victims. Local Red Cross staff and volunteers will be on the concourse with information and will accept contributions at their table. The Dodgers will also have items which will be raffled off to help raise more funds. The first 1,000 kids through the gates will receive a back-to-school binder thanks to the Press Journal. And following the game, fans will be treated to a post-game fireworks display.
