Boston Breakers News Release
The Breakers (1-3-4) will head to the West coast for the first time this season to take on WPS Week 9 Player of the Week, Marta and the first place FC Gold Pride (6-2-1) on Saturday, June 19 at 10 p.m. EST. The two teams will battle in Bay Area's newly renovated 5,000 seat venue, Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, California.
The Breakers are coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sky Blue FC on June 13, outshooting the defending WPS Champions 20-9 and dominating the first 45 minutes of play. Boston found the back of the net first as defender Jordan Angeli scored her first career goal to give the Breakers the early lead just 14 minutes into action. Sky Blue FC answered back with two second half goals, including a penalty kick by Rosana in stoppage time to secure the win and send her team back to New Jersey with three points.
Since their match-up with the Breakers on May 14, FC Gold Pride has gone 1-1-1. They were shutout for the second time this season at Chicago on May 29. They followed that loss against the Red Stars with a 1-1 tie versus the Washington Freedom on June 5. Last week the Bay Area squad defeated Philadelphia 3-1.
In their previous meeting this season, Boston and Bay Area lit up the scoreboard early, with all three goals coming before the 45-minute mark. Kelly Smith netted the lone goal for Boston while Marta scored both for Bay Area. While the Breakers fell short of the victory, the game was closely matched, with Boston outshooting FC Gold Pride 13-8.
Alex Scott and Smith will both miss the game as they will be playing with England in a World Cup qualifying match against Spain.
