Boston Breakers News Release
Following Wednesday night's 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Independence, the Boston Breakers left on a two-game road trip, which begins Saturday night in Boca Raton, Florida against magicJack. Both teams are tied for fourth place in the WPS standings.
The Boston Breakers (4-6-4) saw their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end Wednesday as the Philadelphia Independence scored in the 83rd minute to take the 1-0 win in front of 3,343 at Harvard Stadium.
"I was proud of the players," Breakers Head Coach Tony DiCicco said. "I think we had a chance as good if not even better with Nikki Marshall, but (Nicole) Barnhart made the save. We've proven that we can play with anyone."
In the 83rd minute, Vero Boquete hit a ball into the upper right corner from inside the 18, which held up for the game-winner. The Breakers defended well throughout the match, shutting down threats from Tasha Kai, the league's leading scorer, as well as the dangerous Amy Rodriguez.
In the match, keeper Alyssa Naeher set a franchise record for saves in a season when she stopped a shot by Boquete in the third minute. The previous record (69 saves) was set last year by Naeher. On the record-breaking save by Naeher, Boquete came in on goal and fired a shot on goal from just outside the six-yard box.
The Breakers and magicJack will face each other for the third time this season. The first meeting came April 23 in South Florida when magicJack took a 1-0 win, but on the return to Boston on June 5, the Breakers won, 2-1, on goals by Meghan Klingenberg and Katie Schoepfer.
Currently, the Breakers and magicJack sit just three points behind third-place Sky Blue FC. The New Jersey club beat magicJack, 2-0, on Wednesday in Florida. Saturday, Sky Blue FC takes on the Western New York Flash. A Boston win coupled with a Sky Blue FC loss, puts Boston and Sky Blue in a tie for third place. Saturday's game against magicJack takes place at 7 p.m. at FAU Soccer Stadium.
