Atlanta Beat Face Philadelphia Independence Sunday

KENNESAW, Ga. (July 29, 2011) - The Atlanta Beat (1-10-4) of Women's Professional Soccer travel to the Philadelphia Independence (8-3-3) at Widener University on Sunday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. for a fourth and final meeting this season in the Fox Soccer Channel WPS Game of the Week.

The Beat tied 0-0 at home against magicJack in their most recent match on Saturday, July 23 in front of a sold-out crowd of 9,345 fans at KSU Soccer Stadium. The match marked the return of the Beat's U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) players Carli Lloyd (midfield) and Heather Mitts, who rejoined their Atlanta club following the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

In Philadelphia's last match (also on Saturday, July 23), the league-leading Independence fell 2-0 on the road at Sky Blue FC (NY/NJ). The match remained tied until Sky Blue forward Casey Nogueria found the back of the net in the 70th and 80th minutes. Philly's USWNT players Amy Rodriguez, Nicole Barnhart and Lori Lindsey also returned to their WPS team last week against New Jersey. These three players in addition to the three Beat World Cup participants will also be recognized during Philly's "See Extraordinary Heroes" celebration at Widener University on Sunday.

When the Beat and Independence last met on July 16, Philly narrowly defeated Atlanta by a 1-0 scoreline. Forward Vero Boquete scored the lone goal of the match in the 73rd minute. The Beat are 0-2-1 against the Independence in 2011 and -0-4-3 all-time.

The Atlanta Beat return home on Saturday, Aug. 6 to host World Cup heroes Alex Morgan (USA), Marta (Brazil) and the Western New York Flash at KSU Soccer Stadium for their last home match of 2011. The Aug. 6 match is also PUMA's Project Pink night at the stadium and will feature an entirely pink theme with players from the home team wearing pink uniforms and playing with a pink game ball in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.
