DANVILLE, VA - A pitcher's duel broke out in Danville tonight, and the Braves pulled out a 3-1 win to even the series against the Princeton Rays. Starter Ryan Clark went five innings only allowing two hits and one run, while striking out three P-Rays to record his fourth win of the season. Braves relievers Luis Gamez and Chase Johnson-Mullins combined for four scoreless innings. Gamez went 2 2/3 innings not giving up a hit, while Johnson-Mullins went 1 1/3 innings also not allowing a hit.
The P-Rays got on the board firs in the top of the second inning when catcher David Rodriguez doubled to Left field to set up Kewby Meyer with a potential RBI situation. Meyer would send a fly ball to center field, Braves center fielder Ray Didder would attempt a diving catch to save a run with two outs but was unsuccessful as the ball squirted out from his glove and it was a base hit and an RBI for Meyer as the Rays took a 1-0 lead.
Danville would answer back in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs to take the lead 2-1. Braves newest outfielder Justin Ellison would send a lead-off single to left center field, just over the short stop Jonathan Popadics' glove. Braves third baseman Austin Riley would then walk to put runners on first and second for the D-Braves best hitter, Carlos Castro. Castro would send a deep line drive off the wall in left field, scoring Ellison to tie the game at 1-1. Outfielder Jose Morel would then drive in the go ahead run on a single past the diving Rays third baseman Brett Sullivan to give the D-Braves the lead 3-1.
The score remained the same for the next four innings, until the D-Braves added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Morel would walk to lead off the inning, who was then thrown out at second attempting to steal the base. The very next batter, shortstop Kurt Hoekstra tripled off the top of the center field wall nearly clearing the fence. Hoekstra's triple would set up second baseman Yeudi Grullon's RBI single to extend the Braves lead to 3-1.
Braves pitchers Clark and Gamez retired an astounding fifteen batters in a row from the top of the third inning until the top of the eighth inning with two outs left in the inning.
Braves will go for the series win tomorrow in the rubber match with the series tied at 1-1. Game time is set for 7 PM and it is Thirsty Thursday presented by Buffalo Wild Wings. Draft beer and fountain sodas will be discounted through the seventh inning of the contest.
