Mississippi Braves News Release

The Mississippi Braves won their second consecutive game Friday night as they defeated the Mobile BayBears, 5-4, in front of 3,801 fans at Trustmark Park.

Mobile reeled off five straight singles to start the top of the first inning. The first three of those singles came in to score. Greg Thomson hit a shallow pop fly to center that found a hole and Yunesky Sanchez slapped a single to left. Rusty Ryal then shot a single down the left field line that loaded the bases for Cesar Nicolas. Nicolas singled to left plating Thomson and Sanchez and moving Ryal to third. Frank Curreri then slapped a single to left scoring Ryal with the BayBears third run.

Mississippi cut the lead to one in the fourth. Diory Hernandez led off with a double and, with two outs in the inning, came in to score on a single by Van Pope. Pope moved to second on the throw home and to third when the throw sailed over the catcher's head to the back-stop. On the play, Pope injured his leg and was replaced by Mike Rozema. Rozema came in to score on a single by Matt Young. After four, Mobile led 3-2.

The M-Braves took a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Michael Nix, who had come on in relief of Todd Redmond, got things started with a single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Javier Guzman. Hernandez's single to right plated Nix with the tying run and pushed Guzman over to third. Greg Creek's walk loaded the bases and Mark Jurich's single to right brought Guzman and Hernandez to the plate.

Mobile added a run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Braves held on for a 5-4 win.

Braves' starter Todd Redmond gave up three runs in the first inning, but recovered to shut the BayBears down after the first. In all, he gave up three runs on seven hits through 4.2 innings. He fanned seven on the night. Michael Nix gave up a run on two hits through 2.1 innings and improved to 1-1 on the year. Luis Valdez threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year.

BayBears' starter Hector Ambriz gave up five runs on seven hits through 4.1 innings and fell to 0-1 on the season. Abe Woody kept the M-Braves off the scoreboard over the final 3.2 innings.

The M-Braves and the BayBears will play game four of this five-gamer Saturday night at 7:05 pm at Trustmark Park. The Braves will send righty Jairo Cuevas (0-1, 2.25) to the hill in search of his first win while Mobile will counter with righty Matt Torra (1-0, 0.00) who's going for his second W in two tries.

On Saturday night, Myron Noodleman will be in attendance entertaining fans and players alike.
