Danville Otterbots News Release
ELIZABETHTON, TN - The Danville Braves bounced back from Wednesday's meltdown with a resounding 13-5 win over the Elizabethton Twins today.
The Braves had a season-high 19 hits in today's game and everyone in the starting lineup had a hit. Seven individuals contributed at least one RBI.
The Braves scored four in the second as Cody Johnson started it all with a double down the right-field line. Josh Morris knocked him in with a single. Adam Coe followed Morris and hit a home run to left to go up 3-0. After back-to-back singles by C.J. Lee and Jeff Stevens, Javier Dominguez doubled to bring Lee in and move Stevens to third. After a strikeout, Travis Jones tried to get Stevens in on a sac fly. However, Stevens was nailed at the plate by the centerfielder's throw. Ironically, it was the second night in a row that a Braves catcher was thrown out at home on a sac fly attempt.
Danville struck for two more in the fourth when Michael Fisher hit a one-out triple to score Dominguez and Jones followed up with an RBI double to left.
The Twins got in the board in the bottom of the frame after nearly wasting a leadoff triple. Greg Yersich singled to put the run across.
The Braves' sixth saw one more Danville run. Stevens led off with a single and advanced to third on consecutive groundouts. Stevens came across on a two-out wild pitch.
Danville had another run the next inning on a potential double-play ball, but it turned out to be a forceout that saw a throwing error by the second baseman as Johnson came around to score.
The Braves scored for the third consecutive inning in the eighth. They had runners on first and third after Fisher doubled and Jones singled with one down. Ernesto Mejia singled to bring one in and advance the other to second. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Johnson took advantage with a two-run single. A strikeout and a flyout ended the inning.
A two-out, three-run shot in the bottom of the inning off Brett Butts got three runs back for the Twins. All three runs were unearned due to a two-out fielding error by Coe.
A bases-loaded walk by Fisher and a sac fly by Jones scored a couple for Danville in the ninth and a wild pitch by Cory Gearrin scored one for Elizabethton in the bottom of the ninth as the Braves won 13-5.
Chad Rodgers pitched four innings and struck out seven, walked one, and allowed two hits. He had one earned run. His seven strikeouts are best for any one pitcher this season and the 13 total K's tie the team high. Tommy Palica (1-0) relieved and got the win with a trio of scoreless frames. He allowed three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Dominguez and Stevens both went 3-for-5.
Henry Reyes (1-1) took the loss after giving up four earned runs. He pitched the first inning and to six batters in the second.
The team will head to Greeneville to finish up the road trip. The team is back on the first of July, when kids can run the bases after the game. Fireworks follow on July 3rd.
The Braves are 5-3 and the Twins are 7-1.
