Mississippi Braves News Release
On a wet night at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS, the M-Braves took on the Tennessee Smokies in a match-up of marquee pitching names. Mississippi's Tommy Hanson and Tennessee's Jeff Samardzija dueled for three-and-a-half frames before the rains came. After an hour delay, the M-Braves came out swinging ... and walking. The Braves pitching staff had a stellar night as they allowed a season-low three hits, two of which were infield singles in the ninth, and a season-high tying 12 strikeouts.
Jordan Schafer, the first batter after the delay, led off the home-half of the fourth with a single to center. Greg Creek's single moved Schafer into scoring position and he scored on Van Pope's single. Schafer was out by five steps at the plate, but catcher Chris Robinson dropped the throw from Tyler Colvin at the plate. Javier Guzman reached on a fielder's choice and Jose Camarena walked to load the bases. Quentin Davis and JC Holt drew back-to-back walks to drive in Pope and Guzman and the M-Braves had a 3-0 lead.
The Braves manufactured an insurance run in the eighth to push the lead to 4-0. Greg Creek doubled down the right field line and moved to third on Pope's grounder to second. Guzman put down a perfect squeeze bunt that allowed Creek to score easily to extend the Braves lead.
Tommy Hanson struck out six through four innings of work before the delay. Sung Ki Jung came on and tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the year. Michael Nix tossed two scoreless innings and Kevin Gunderson sat the Smokies down in the ninth to finish out the game.
Jeff Samardzija threw three scoreless frames for the Smokies prior to the delay. Mark Holliman came on after the rain and allowed three unearned runs to fall to 0-3 on the season. Darin Downs threw 1.1 scoreless and Michael Cooper threw one scoreless frame.
The Braves and Smokies will play game four of this five-game set Saturday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05 ct. Mississippi lefty Carlos Sencion will face off against Tennessee lefty James Russell.
Saturday night will be Dairy Night at Trustmark Park where the first 2,000 fans will receive a FREE regulation sized soccer ball. A silent auction of spectacular Braves memorabilia will also be held throughout the game.
Tomahawk Chops:
The Braves pitching staff held the Smokies to three hits and struck out a season-high tying 12 batters.
Greg Creek went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.
