Norfolk Tides News Release
August 8, 2006 - Dave Williams scattered three hits and did not allow an earned run in 6.0 innings of work, but the Richmond Braves rallied with two 7th inning runs en route to a 4-3 win over the Tides Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Williams struck out six without walking a batter, yielding just an unearned run on an RBI single by Brayan Pena in the 4th inning. The 27-year-old southpaw has not allowed an earned run in 14.0 innings of work since coming off the disabled list with a strained shoulder on July 30. Over that stretch, Williams has allowed just six hits while walking one and striking out nine.
The Tides jumped out to an early lead off of Richmond starter Lance Cormier, as Jose Offerman drilled a two-out home run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Norfolk extended the lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning on a double play ground out by Jacob Cruz.
After Pena's RBI single in the 4th, the score stayed 2-1 until the Braves plated two runs in the 7th inning off of Tides' reliver Yusaku Iriki (2-7). Martin Prado connected for a one-out home run to center field to tie the score at 2-2, and the Braves pulled ahead 3-2 on an RBI infield single by James Jurries.
Richmond extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the 9th inning on RBI single by Bill McCarthy that scored Pena, who finished the contest 4-for-4.
Norfolk rallied in the bottom of the 9th, as Ruben Gotay lifted a one-out bases loaded sacrifice fly which scored Tagg Bozied to bring the Tides within one run. Richmond closer Manny Acosta ended the threat however, striking out Jose Offerman looking with runners on first and third to secure his 12th save of the season.
The two teams will meet again in game two of the series Wednesday night, with southpaw Oliver Perez slated to make his Harbor Park debut for the Tides. Richmond is scheduled to counter with right-hander Kevin Barry, with game time set for 7:15 p.m.
