Braves quiet O's in home regular season finale

August 28, 2009 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - Brett Oberholtzer and a dominating bullpen closed out the Braves' home regular season with a 5-1 win over the Bluefield Orioles on Fireworks Friday night at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. The pitching staff three-hit the O's and the Braves offense scored four times in the third inning in the victory. The Braves improved to 45-19, while Bluefield fell to 32-32.

The Braves kicked in four runs in the third inning to provide all the difference they would need for Oberholtzer and the ‘pen. The first five men reached in the inning as Bobby Rauh walked and O's starter Bobby Bundy hit L.V. Ware with a pitch to start the inning. Travis Adair then doubled into the left-field corner to score Rauh and give the Braves the lead. Cory Harrilchak followed with his own two-run double down the line to make it 3-0. Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg's single moved Harrilchak to third and Osman Marval capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Oberholtzer (6-2), who snagged the win, did not need any more support than that as he faced just one over the minimum in his five innings of work, surrendering just a one-out single in the second.

David Hale continued that fine work by one-hitting the Orioles over the next three innings and Derick Himpsl surrendered an unearned run in the ninth.

The Braves added a fifth run in the game in the eighth inning after Marval doubled, moved to third on a Robby Hefflinger single and scored on Matt Weaver's double play.

Bundy (2-7) took the loss for Bluefield, allowing four runs on four hits in three innings.

The Braves will now head to Bluefield for one game before travelling to Kingsport for a three-game set to close the regular season. The Braves will then head to Elizabethton on Wednesday for Game 1 of the Appy League Championship Series. Braves play-by-play voice Nick Pierce will have the call from Elizabethton on WMNA 106.3 FM and on the station's website, www.espninva.com.
