Mississippi Braves News Release
The Braves swept both games of a doubleheader at home for the first time in team history with two 2-1 wins over the Tennessee Smokies in front of 5,011 fans at Trustmark Park Thursday night. Homeruns brought all the Braves runs in as Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot in game one, and Brandon Jones belted his fourth homer of the year, a two-run walk-off shot, to end game two.
In game one, Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the second when Jesus Cota ripped his eighth homer of the year over the wall in right field.
The Braves countered with a homer of their own in the bottom of the second inning. Barbaro Canizares singled to left to lead off the inning and Jarrod Saltalamacchia blasted his sixth homer of the year off the batter's eye in centerfield to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
Smokies' starter Garrett Mock (5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 HR) gave up a two run homer and left the game trailing 2-1. He fell to 4-8 on the year. Dustin Glant (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) threw one scoreless inning.
Braves' starter Chris Waters (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 1 WP) gave up a solo homer in the second but recovered to shut down the Smokies through three more innings. He left the game with a 2-1 and improved to 6-8 on the season. Glenn Tucker (1.0 IP) threw one perfect inning of relief. Zach Schreiber (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K) threw a scoreless seventh inning to record his team-high 13th save of the year.
In game two, Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the fourth after Mark Reynolds walked, Augustin Murillo singled, and Phil Avlas reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Wilkin Castillo then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought Reynolds to the plate with the game's first run and a Smokies' lead. It was all the Smokies would need.
The Braves got the lead off runner on in the bottom of the seventh in the form of Josh Burrus. Brandon Jones ended the game with the third walk-off homer in Mississippi Braves history.
Smokies' starter Ross Ohlendorf (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K) gave up a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to fall to 7-6 on the year.
