WORCESTER - In their first home game of the 2015 season, the Worcester Bravehearts completed a sweep of a home-and-home series with their I-190 rivals the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs with a 5-1 victory June 5 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Bravehearts starter Jonathan Mulford set the tempo, as the Adelphi University senior went six strong innings with no earned runs and only four hits allowed. Mulford also struck out six as he claimed his first victory of the season.

Wachusett broke the deadlock in the second inning when UConn catcher Alex Lefevre knocked in Quinnipiac University first baseman Ben Gibson. But the Bravehearts countered in the bottom half of the inning when University of New Haven catcher TJ Riccio hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score West Virginia Wesleyan first baseman Michael Logsdon.

Dante Ricciardi, Worcester shortstop and incoming freshman at Georgetown University, knocked in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the fourth inning. The Bravehearts padded their lead in the same inning when Ricciardi scored on a passed ball, and Lamar University second baseman Gavin Tristan scored on the same play thanks to a throwing error by Alex Lefevre. Along with Ricciardi, Assumption College third baseman and Shrewsbury native Mike Coggeshall finished with two hits and a run scored.

Worcester State pitcher and Dirt Dawgs starter Zach Zona took the loss, as he allowed all five runs to score on seven hits and two walks.

Charlie Butler, University of Maine pitcher and Marlboro native, closed the door in the ninth inning by retiring the side in order to lift the Bravehearts to a perfect 2-0 record.

The Worcester Bravehearts will face the Martha's Vineyard Sharks in a rematch of the 2014 FCBL Championship Finals at 7:05 p.m. June 6 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Bravehearts will be presenting their 2014 FCBL Championship rings before the game.
