Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings built up a 4-0 second period lead en route to a convincing 6-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors in Western Hockey League pre-season action Friday night at Westman Place.

Goals by rookies Brayden Schenn and Matt Calvert and veteran Tyler Dittmer gave Brandon a 3-0 lead through twenty minutes and when 17-year old Sanfred King connected in the opening minute of the second the Wheat Kings were well on their way to improving their unbeaten pre-season record to 3-0.

Brandon and the Warriors will close out their pre-season schedule Saturday night in Moose Jaw. The Wheat Kings, who were 4-14 with the man advantage Friday night, will then return home to host the visiting Saskatoon Blades in Friday's season opener.

A former first round draft choice of the Wheat Kings, Schenn led Brandon with two goals Friday night. Veteran defenceman Mark Louis rounded out Brandon's scoring with a powerplay goal in the third period.

Jason Bast and Giffen Nyren replied for the Warriors, who were outshot 34-21 and trailed 3-0 and 5-2 at the period breaks.

In other Wheat King news, the defending Eastern Division Champions have announced that veteran defenceman Theran Yeo will need knee surgery.

Yeo, one of four 20-year olds currently on the WHL club's pre-season roster, injured his knee during the hockey club's Intrasquad game on September 2nd. The 6'1" 220 lb Prince Albert native has been practicing with the Wheat Kings this month but had not been cleared to play.

The decision for surgery was made after an MRI on Thursday. A date for surgery is expected to be confirmed next week. With the arthoscopic procedure, Yeo is expected to miss two to three weeks.

Brandon's other overage players include Tyler Dittmer, Mark Louis and Daryl Boyle, who is currently attending the Bruins' National Hockey League Training Camp in Boston.
