Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - With one week remaining before the start of the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League season, the Brandon Wheat Kings have announced the acquisition of 19-year old right-winger Matt Lowry from the defending champion Medicine Hat Tigers.
In exchange for the 6' 185 lb. Neepawa product, the Tigers receive a sixth round draft choice in the 2008 WHL bantam draft.
A former member of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Neepawa Natives, Lowry played in 63 regular season games for the Tigers last season, scoring ten goals and 22 points while accumulating 42 minutes in penalties. Lowry added one assist in 22 playoff games.
As a Native in 2005-06, he averaged more than a point per game, scoring nineteen goals and 40 points in 38 games.
"Matt brings championship experience to our club," says Wheat Kings' general manager and coach Kelly McCrimmon. "He gives us a veteran right-hand shot forward that we felt we needed."
Friday's acquisition gives the Wheat Kings twenty-six players on its pre-season roster, including fourteen WHL veterans.
Lowry is expected to join the Wheat Kings this weekend and will practice with his new club on Monday afternoon.
The Wheat Kings continue preparations for the 2007-08 season this weekend with a home and home pre-season series with the Moose Jaw Warriors, beginning Friday night at Westman Place. Tickets to both tonight's pre-season game as well as Friday's Coca Cola Home Opener are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order by phone by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
