Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Koch Fertilizer Canada Ltd have unveiled plans to present an unofficial kick-off to the 2007-08 Manitoba Minor Hockey season Sunday afternoon at Westman Place when Brandon plays host to the Eastern Division leading Regina Pats.
In recognition of the new season, Koch Fertilizer Canada Ltd has purchased blocks of tickets so that over twenty teams will have the opportunity to travel to Brandon for the traditional Remembrance Day game, scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
Among the communities planning to be represented at Saturday's game, which will feature a special pre-game Remembrance Day Ceremony before the opening face-off, include Hamiota, Brandon, Tri-Town (Rivers, Cardale and Oak River), Melita, Boissevain, Killarney, Shoal Lake, Elkhorn, Miniota, Deloraine, Souris, Minnedosa,Hartney, Holland and Treherne. Helping to perform the ceremonial opening face-off will be 7-year old Hudson Mealy of the Boissevain Novice and 6-year old Carter Charney of the Shoal Lake Squirts. They will be joined by Lieutenant-Colonel John Schneiderbanger and Base Chief Warrant Officer Steven Walsh from Canadian Forces Base Shilo.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings will be hoping to run their home ice winning streak to four games on Sunday after doubling up on the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 6-3 before 4,411 fans Friday night.
Brandon got goals from six different players in the win, including one from veteran Andrew Clark, who added three assists. Daniel Bartek, Tyler Dittmer, Colby Robak, Scott Glennie and Matt Lowry also scored for the Wheat Kings, who improved their record to 12-7-0-1 on the season.
Tickets to Sunday's game will be on sale all day Saturday, with the box office scheduled to open at 1 p.m. Sunday (Remembrance Day). Fans can also purchase online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 726-3555.
