Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

[WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.] – It took a shootout but the Asheville Aces defeated the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 4-3 Sunday night at LJVM Annex in Southern Professional Hockey League action. Chad Brandimore had two goals for the Aces, including the game-winner in the shootout.

The Polar Twins got off to a quick start, scoring only 41 seconds into the game to grab the 1-0 lead. Trevor Jobe got control of the puck in the left wing faceoff circle and skated in untouched by the Asheville defense. Jobe took advantage of the situation to fake out Aces goaltender Mark Scally and once Scally went down, slid the puck over the goal line for the fastest goal in Polar Twins history.

Asheville came back in the second with Peter Cermak's 11th goal of the season to tie it 1-1 at 1:09 of the frame. Brandimore made it 2-1 Asheville at 12:46 of the second, wristing an off-balance shot past Rick Nichol for his fourth goal of the season.

Winston-Salem tied it up at 14:10 on a power play tally by Richard Gustafsson. Scally stopped the first shot but could not control the rebound, which was gobbled up by Gustafsson who buried the puck for his fifth goal of the season.

Asheville regained the lead later in the period when a bad defensive play at center ice by the Polar Twins caused a two-on-one break which resulted in Chester Gallant's first goal in an Aces uniform and a 3-2 Asheville lead.

Mike Walling tied it for the Polar Twins in the third, drilling a shot from the top of the faceoff circle to beat Scally and send the Twins to their third straight overtime game.

Both teams went scoreless in the overtime, brining the Twins to their second straight shootout and first at home this season. In the shootout, Scally stopped all three shots he faced and Brandimore scored the only goal for Asheville to lead the Aces to the 4-3 victory.

The Polar Twins return to action Friday night when the Huntsville Havoc come to town for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. Then on Saturday the Twins take to home ice against the Columbus Cottonmouths with that game also beginning at 7:30 p.m.
