Aces Put The Freeze on the Barracudas

January 30, 2005 - SPHL (SPHL)
Asheville Aces News Release

Even a dire weather forecast could not stop the Aces tonight as they played their best game in weeks on their way to a 5-4 overtime thriller at the Civic Center Saturday night. An exciting game of 'in your face hockey' did not disappoint the 700+ fans who defied weather warnings and came to cheer on their hometown Aces. The Aces responded, ending the game (and a losing streak) in dramatic fashion as Ryan Crowther drove hard to the net in overtime to put the puck past Barracuda goalie Randy Hevey for the Asheville win.

The Aces were clearly the more physical team on this night as they constantly punished the Barracuda players in the corners, in front of the net and in open ice. Chris Kovalcik played the role of 'Super Pest' as he did everything in his power to make the homecoming of former Ace defenseman Sergei Visegorodcevs miserable. Visegorodcevs' frustration became evident quite quickly as early on in the first period he and Kovalcik squared off at center ice resulting in an early exit for Visegorodcevs after Kovalcik landed several hard punches to his head.

Peter Bournazakis had a stellar night for Asheville with a hat-trick and Joel Petkoff, who was moved to a line with R.J. Roy and Chester Gallant, had the other Aces regulation goal. Crowther got the winner mid-way through the overtime period.

The Aces travel to Winston-Salem on Sunday for a 6:00 p.m. match with the Polar Twins. This is the start of a busy road week for Asheville as they are in Macon on Tuesday, Knoxville on Thursday and back to Macon on Friday. The next Aces home game is Thursday, February 10 versus Huntsville. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center.
