Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (August 14)- The 2009 Central Hockey League (CHL) Champions, Texas Brahmas, are able to cross off size on their offseason agenda as they have announced the signing of right wing Derek Merlini for the 2009-10 campaign.
Merlini, who stands at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, comes to the Brahmas with two seasons of professional hockey experience with the Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League (IHL). Last season the 24 year old winger posted 30 points (9 G, 21 A) in 73 games played and accumulated 114 penalty minutes. During his rookie season in 2007-08, Merlini registered 5 points (2 G, 3 A) in just 43 games.
The Clinton Township, MI native played two seasons at the University of Windsor of the CIS collecting 4 points (2 G, 2 A) in 19 games. Prior to playing at the collegiate level, Merlini spent four years playing juniors to sharpen his game, including three strong seasons with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). His commitment was rewarded with an invitation to the Phoenix Coyotes rookie camp.
"This is a great signing for us this offseason. We obviously were looking for some size, and I believe Derek will be just the player for us to use his size, strength and skill to his advantage," Wildfong said.
Merlini becomes the eleventh player for the 2009-10 Texas Brahmas as he joins Craig Minard, Casey Russell, Brett Jaeger, Jason Deitsch, Jamie Carroll, A.J. Gale, Jordan Cameron, Anders Strome, Kevin McLeod and Kyle Deck.
