NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (May 1)-Though the Brahmas were able to come back from a two goal deficit in Game Two of the CHL Finals to send the game into the extra period, Texas was unable to finish it off as they fell to the Colorado Eagles 5-4.
The Eagles set an early statement two minutes in the game when Riley Nelson beat goaltender Brett Jaeger for the 1-0 lead. Yet, penalty troubles plagued Colorado late in the period giving the Brahmas five opportunities on the job. Sniper Scott Sheppard took the man advantage into his own hands scoring two powerplay goals a minute and a half apart to give the Brahmas a 2-1 lead headed into the intermission. Forward Jason Deitsch had the primary assists for both goals and Jordan Cameron and Kevin McLeod were credited with the secondary helpers.
Deitsch was sentenced to the sin bin for a high sticking call in the middle frame and with only five seconds remaining on the powerplay Eagles forward Konrad Reeder was able to beat Texas netminder Brett Jaeger for his fourth goal of the postseason. At the 5:33 mark in second Colorado was able to notch their second goal in the period as Scott Polaski beat Jaeger in a mad scramble in front of the net.
Jaeger found himself out of position four minutes in the final period, and despite the first shot being deflected off the post, Jay Birnie knew what to do with an open net for an Eagle two goal lead. Following the hiccup, Brahmas coach Dan Wildfong called a timeout to settle the Texas bench, and the breather was just the thing for the Southern Conference Champs as they returned to the ice and scored a goal :16 seconds off the faceoff. It was Deitsch's sixth goal in the playoffs.
The Brahmas, who scored the most shorthanded goals in the regular season, proved to the Eagles why even their penalty kill was lethal when Brandon Benedict intercepted a pass and slapped a shot past Colorado netminder Andrew Penner to make it a 4-4 game. The remainder of the period remained a tight defensive battle sending Game Two into the extra period.
Things heated up in overtime sending both Texas forward Greg McConnell and Colorado captain Greg Pankewicz to the penalty box for roughing. As 20 seconds expired in the penalties, Brahmas defenseman Justin Kinnunen took a costly slashing penalty, making it 4-on-3 for 1:40. Seven minutes in the period Ed McGrane was able to send the puck to the back of Jaeger's net for the victory. The best of seven series is now tied 1-1.
Texas hosts Game Three Sunday afternoon at the NYTEX Sports Centre at 3:05 PM. Game Four is set for Tuesday at 7:05 PM and Game Five will be Wednesday at 7:05 PM. For ticket information please contact the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423.
