Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth - Five different Fort Worth players scored goals and goaltender Larry Sterling stopped 33 of the 35 Colorado shots he faced to lead the Brahmas to a 5-2 win over the Colorado Eagles in Tuesday night CHL action at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The win for the Brahmas was their first in franchise history over Colorado (the 2004-2005 CHL President's Cup Champions). Last season, the Brahmas lost twice to the Eagles. In 2003-2004, Colorado's inaugural season in the CHL, the Brahmas were defeated three times by the Eagles.
Tuesday night's win by the Brahmas also snapped a three-game losing streak for the club. Fort Worth's last win came on Saturday, November 12 over the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
Early in the game, it was the Eagles who came out flying. Colorado forward Greg Pankewicz capitalized on an odd man rush just 3:03 into the first period to put the Eagles on top 1-0. Fort Worth, however, answered back just 1:43 later on winger Bret DeCecco's Brahmas' team leading 8th goal of the season.
In the second period, Fort Worth went ahead for good when forward Derek Seal scored a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 3:32 mark of the period. The goal for Seal was his fourth of the season and his third in three games. The Brahmas extended their lead to 3-1 at the 4:52 mark of the second when forward Ben Gustavson tipped a powerplay goal past Colorado goaltender Jeff Blair.
In the final period, Fort Worth made the score 4-1 when Brahmas team captain Wes Mason was able to steer a lose puck past Blair and into the Colorado net at the 8:47 mark of the third. A score by Eagles forward Fraser Filipic at the 15:09 mark pulled the Eagles back to within 4-2. The Brahmas then sealed the game with just 24 seconds left in regulation when centerman Cory Stillman fired the puck into an empty Colorado net.
Sterling was brilliant in goal for the Brahmas, specifically in the first period when he turned away 13 of the 14 Colorado shots sent his way. The win for the Fort Worth goaltender was his 7th of the season. Sterling has been the winning goaltender in all seven of Fort Worth's victories this season.
Blair took the loss in net for Colorado, allowing four Fort Worth goals on the 32 shots he faced. The defeat for the Eagles drops their record to 8-4-0 on the season.
Fort Worth, now 7-5-1 on the season, picked up one standings point on the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in the CHL's Northeast Division race. Bossier was defeated 7-6 in a shootout by the Youngstown Steelhounds in Bossier on Tuesday night. The Brahmas and the Mudbugs will meet this Friday, November 25th, at the Century-Tel Center in Bossier City in a key divisional game. The Brahmas will then return home on Saturday, November 26, to host the Oklahoma City Blazers at 7:30 p.m. at the FWCC. Saturday night's game will be Puck Night, as the first 2,000 fans through the FWCC gates will receive a free Brahmas puck courtesy of Home Theatre Technologies. Also on Saturday, their will be a pregame "Run From Your Relatives" party directly in front of the Main Street entrance to the FWCC. The Cody Gill Band will play from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at this free party. For additional information, please contact the Brahmas team office at (817) 336-4423.
