Bradenton Marauders News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Po-Yu Chen tossed a career-high seven scoreless innings to lead the Marauders past the Clearwater Threshers, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at BayCare Ballpark.
The shutout was the tenth of the season for the Marauders (70-43), who maintained a slim 1-0 lead from the second inning until plating additional runs in the eighth and ninth.
Chen (1-0) held the Threshers (49-61) to just three hits, all singles, while walking three and striking out six. The right-hander allowed at least one baserunner in five of his seven innings, but held Clearwater 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Nick Dombkowski completed the game with two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one baserunner on a ninth-inning error.
Threshers starter Cristian Hernandez (2-7) took the loss, allowing just one run across five innings but receiving no run support.
Maikol Escotto plated the game's first run on a second-inning RBI-single that scored Jackson Glenn, who had led off with a double. The RBI-single stood as the game's only run until the eighth inning, when Ernny Ordonez added an RBI-single.
Bradenton rallied for a pair of insurance runs off Clearwater reliever Jason Ruffcorn in the ninth. Escotto beat out an infield single, and after Francisco Acuna reached on a two-base error, Kyle Wilkie delivered an RBI-groundout and Acuna scored on a wild pitch by Ruffcorn.
In both the second and third innings, Clearwater put the tying run on second base as Chen issued a walk and subsequently balked, in both instances. But the Threshers were unable to plate a run in either inning, and went on to strand a total of six baserunners in seven innings against Chen, whose six strikeouts were one shy of his career high.
Escotto, Ordonez, and Endy Rodriguez each recorded two hits in the game, while Glenn's second-inning double extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games, one shy of matching Hudson Head's team-high of 25, set between May 15 and June 18.
The Marauders will travel to Lakeland on Tuesday to open a six-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the Low-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Publix Field.
