Boston Sports Review names Slugger most-underrated mascot
March 9, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
Can an over-exposed, wall-dwelling green monster ever truly rival the understated elegance of the bald eagle, the very symbol of this great country? Not according to the latest issue of the Boston Sports Review.
In the March 2006 edition of the monthly publication, David Scott proclaimed North Shore Spirit mascot Slugger to be the area's most underrated mascot, while saddling a certain Yawkey Way creation with the overrated moniker.
Scott declared Slugger to be symbolic of all that is good about baseball writing, "A bald(ing) eagle with three white stars, two red stripes and a white stripe emblazoned on his blue feathers, the yellow-beaked, sneaker-wearing bird is what baseball is all about: Mom, American Pie and, uh, yellow leggings."
Scott also praised Slugger for the positive impact he has had on the City of Lynn. "Now, with the Spirit's fourth year of Can-Am League baseball about to begin, Slugger and his baseball buddies have turned Lynn into the City of Win. And he didn't need Rem Dawg or Raymond to tout (or crush) him," Scott wrote.
When reached for comment, Slugger who is a bald eagle and therefore incapable of speech, flapped his wings and squawked with pleasure. He was taken aback with the surprise honor, but validated in his quest to spread Spirit throughout the North Shore.
