Chico Outlaws News Release

(Dublin, CA. June 18, 2008) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that LHP Derrick Loop of the Chico Outlaws has had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox. He is the third member of the 2008 Chico pitching staff to be acquired by a major league club in the last few weeks, following teammates Chris Malone (Rockies) and Jesse Oster (Phillies).

"This isn't a surprise at all as he's been outstanding every time out this season," said Chico Outlaws Manager Jon Macalutas. "I think he will do great in the Boston organization and I'm looking forward to watching him rapidly progress."

In an unusual transaction, Loop was purchased while on the mound during his start last night against the Calgary Vipers at home in Chico. Due to his fast start and string of strong outings he had generated interest from a number of major league teams. The Red Sox slipped a scout into Nettleton Stadium last night to do a final check on the young lefty. After five innings of shut out pitching against the top team in the GBL that lowered his season E.R.A. to 0.81, they acquired his contract in mid-game and the deal was announced to the large crowd which responded with a standing ovation.

Loop, 23, was a 23rd round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians out of Cal State Los Angeles in 2006. Sent to Mahoning Valley in the New York - Penn League to play for Cleveland's low A affiliate, he had an outstanding season as a middle reliever posting a 2.89 E.R.A in 22 appearances with a 1-2 record and 2 saves. Unexpectedly released by Cleveland in the off-season, he joined the Chico Outlaws last year and was converted into a starter by 2007 Chico manager Mark Parent and was re-united with his collegiate ptichng coach Alex Carbajal who had a similar role with the Outlaws. He responded with a breakout year as he posted an 8-5 record in 15 starts with a 3.82 E.R.A. and led the Outlaws to the GBL Championship. He had started out this season 3-0 and was leading the GBL in E.R.A. and strikeouts at the time of his purchase.

Loop is the 11th GBL player to be purchased by a major league organization in 2008. Most likely he will be sent to High-A Lancaster where he will join last year's GBL Player of the Year and teammate, Daniel Nava, who was acquired by the Red Sox from Chico in the off-season.
