Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers are making it a habit to jump out to a big lead before making it exciting late.
Things got really interesting in the ninth with Yuma trailing by five, the Scorpions were able to push across three runs, before Ezequiel Ruvelcaba slammed the door shut for the second consecutive night as the Flyers(15-5) topped the Scorpions(11-12) 13-11 at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, CA Wednesday night.
The Flyers used another offensive explosion in the first inning, scoring five runs, before a pair of errors allowed Yuma back into the game.
Yuma scored three runs in the first five innings against Flyers starter Andre Simpson, that were unearned thanks to a pair of O.C. errors. However, Yuma was able to get to Simpson and his e.r.a. in the sixth, scoring four runs in the inning to chase Simpson.
Orange County wasted no time jumping out to a lead as the first three batters reached including an RBI single by Jermy Acey which got the scoring going. Brian Rios followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to plate David Bacani. Jeff LaRue added an RBI single to score Breen and scored when Fernando Pacheco tripled down the right field line totaling five first run innings for the Flyers.
Yuma was able to score in the third when Yosvanny Almario doubled to left center followed by Maikel Jova's single into left field which was bobbled allowing Almario to score.
The Flyers quickly answered back as Patrick Breen blasted a solo shot to start the bottom of the third.
Yuma was able to capitalize on more poor defense from Orange County when Jermy Acey bobbled a Cummins grounder as Yuma was able to push across two unearned runs in the inning.
Ryan Barba added a solo home run for Yuma in the sixth to make the score 12-4.
Maikel Jova drove in two more with a double off the left field wall later in the inning.
Simpson then found himself in trouble as Yuma loaded the bases before beaning Hector Bernal to force in a run. However, Simpson was able to get out of the jam despite running his pitch count to 125.
Yuma picked up a run against the Flyers bullpen in the seventh when Rich Janeway blasted a solo homer off Mont Mansfield.
But Orange County answered back with consecutive singles from Bacani and Acey, with Acey's scoring Bacani.
All of this setup the three run ninth, before Ruvelcaba picked up his third save of the season and second in as many nights.
Anthony Romero was charged the loss, now 0-1.
The two teams will meet for the third and final game of this series, Thursday night at Goodwin Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05, wrapping up the Flyers' nine game homestand on which they are currently 6-2.
