Boston Lobsters, New York Sportimes Issue Super Bowl Challenge

February 2, 2012 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Boston Lobsters News Release

The rivalry between New York and Boston goes further than the gridiron. The World TeamTennis Pro League franchises in both cities are taking it to the tennis courts with a challenge over this weekend's Super Bowl.

The Boston Lobsters, who were previously owned by Patriots owner Robert Kraft in the 1970s, and the New York Sportimes, whose Captain, NYC and tennis icon John McEnroe, also runs the John McEnroe Tennis Academy at the Sportimes venue, are putting city pride and their coaches and mascots on the line over the outcome of the big game.

Either Lobsters' owner Bahar Uttam or Sportimes' owner Claude Okin will treat the team representing the winning city to dinner. If the Giants win, Uttam will be buying New York a lobster dinner from the award-winning Woodman's of Essex, Mass., and if the Patriots win, Okin will be supplying Boston with pastrami and fixings from New York's famed Carnegie Deli.

In addition, if the Patriots win the Super Bowl, the Sportimes' coach and their mascot Tennis the Menace will have to wear a Tom Brady jersey during team introductions when the Sportimes play the Lobsters this summer. Or, if the Giants take the day, the Boston coach and their mascot Larry the Lobster will don an Eli Manning jersey when the Lobsters play the Sportimes. In either case, the jerseys will be signed by some of tennis' top names and auctioned for local charities.

The 2012 WTT Pro League season runs July 9-29. The Boston Lobsters (www.bostonlobsters.net) play their matches at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, Mass., and the New York Sportimes (www.nysportimes.com) play their home matches at Sportime Stadium at Sportime Randall's Island Park. The 2012 WTT schedule will be released in early March.
