HANOVER, Mass. (Aug. 30, 2015) - The Boston Breakers 2015 season came to an end Sunday night in Houston as the host Dash held on for a 1-0 win in front of 6,842 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Playing their third game in eight days, all on the road, the Breakers came out strong to start the match, nearly scoring twice in the first half as they carried possession in the early going.
Stephanie McCaffrey put a shot on goal and had a header saved before hitting a shot just wide of the post in the 17th minute. Seven minutes later, Kyah Simon almost put one in, but her shot went wide by inches.
The Dash took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Ella Masar poked in a cross from Jessica McDonald.
The Breakers had a few chances to tie the match in the second half and almost did so in the 51st minute. Kristie Mewis took a free kick to the right of Dash keeper Erin McLeod and just outside the box. Mewis put it right on the foot of defender Kassey Kallman and Kallman chipped it, but the ball went just over the bar.
Later in the second half, Rafinha struck from distance in the 68th minute, but McLeod was there to make the save. McLeod also stopped a shot on goal by Mewis in the 81st minute and one by Katie Schoepfer in the 90th minute.
The Breakers came up big on the defensive side in the second half to keep it a one-goal game. Rachel Wood slid in strong to stop a threat in the box by Kealia Ohai in the 65th minute. Keeper Alyssa Naeher made a spectacular save on Carli Lloyd in the 85th minute. Lloyd went in one-on-one with Naeher, but Naeher forced her to her left and cut down Lloyd's angle. Lloyd managed to get a shot off, but Naeher dove to make the save, one of five stops on the night for the Breakers keeper.
