HANOVER, Mass. (May 9, 2015) - The Boston Breakers and Chicago Red Stars played a scoreless first half, but the hosts scored three times in the second half to take a 3-0 win Saturday at Toyota Park in Naperville, Ill.
The Breakers were tested early, but fended off Chicago's pressure and turned the momentum in their favor. Kristie Mewis nearly scored in both the 13th and 15th minutes. Her first attempt, from inside the 18, was stopped by Chicago keeper Michele Dalton. In the 15th minute, Rafinha played a ball over the top and into the box for Morgan Marlborough. Three Chicago defenders converged on Marlborough and managed to dispossess the first-year Breaker. However, the ball slid right out to Mewis at the top of the box. She struck a piercing shot on goal, one that Dalton tipped out.
Boston keeper Jami Kranich (six saves), in her professional debut, kept the game scoreless late in the first half. The former Villanova star made a diving stop on a blistering shot by Vanessa DiBernardo in the 39th minute. Kranich was tested immediately in the second half and tipped a shot by Sofia Huerta over the bar.
Chicago scored its first goal in the 56th minute when Huerta got in behind the Boston back line and beat Kranich, who came out to cut down the angle. Cara Walls made it a 2-0 game in the 70th minute, taking a pass from Huerta and hitting it off the underside of the crossbar. Huerta caused havoc again, scoring her second goal of the game in the 82nd minute for the 3-0 final
The Breakers return home Saturday, May 16 for a three-game homestand. They play Portland Thorns FC at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by games against Sky Blue FC (May 22) and FC Kansas City (May 30). To purchase tickets, visit www.breakerstickets.com.
