Boston Breakers Cap Preseason with Win over Boston College

WATERTOWN, Mass. - The Boston Breakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back Friday afternoon at Newton Soccer Complex. The Breakers scored four goals in each half and took an 8-0 decision over the Boston College Eagles, finishing preseason with a 2-2 record.

"It was good to see some of the stuff at the top end of the pitch start to click and gel a little bit," Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. "I think defensively we're looking OK. There's still lot to improve on. But going forward you could start to see people reading each other. We had a good chat at halftime and rectified one or two things, and I think in the second half, we created some good chances, especially penetrating them centrally, which is something we've been trying to do a little bit better."

The scoring started in the 12th minute when McCall Zerboni slotted a pass to Kyah Simon. The Australian striker then beat her defender and hit it past BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant to put the Breakers ahead, 1-0.

In the 32nd minute, Kristie Mewis found Stephanie McCaffrey open near the outside of the box. McCaffrey cut in and beat Bryant far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Breakers went up 3-0 in the 37th minute when Louise Schillgard scored her first goal of the preseason. She chipped Bryant from just inside the box. Three minutes from halftime, Mewis gave the Breakers a 4-0 lead, burying a penalty kick a minute after McCaffrey was brought down in the box.

In the second half, the Breakers struck for four goals and twice scored a pair in less than a minute. The first two came in the 51st and 52nd minutes. Schillgard scored her second of the match, hitting one from 25 yards out and beating Bryant, who came well off her line. Less than a minute later, a ball came over the top to Mewis, who chipped it over a defender to Zerboni, who volleyed it in the bottom right corner for a 6-0 Breakers advantage.

The final two goals were scored in the 73rd and 74th minutes. Mewis tallied her second of the game seconds before Schillgard capped off her hat trick.

Goalkeeper Abby Smith played all 90 minutes, earning the shutout, the first clean sheet of the preseason for the former University of Texas star.

The Breakers now turn their attention to the Washington Spirit. The two teams open the 2016 NWSL season on Saturday, April 16, at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
