THE STAKES: The Battle Wings have endured a three-game losing streak to start a season for the first time in their five-year history. Now, they're circling the wagons to make sure the streak doesn't reach four. The Battle Wings went 2-0 against expansion clubs last year, claiming victories over Laredo and Rio Grande Valley, but the Amarillo Dusters aren't just another start-up squad. In the season's opening week, the Dusters used a last-second scoring strike to get by the Tulsa Talons, a team that withstood the Battle Wings' best effort of the season in Week 2. Amarillo is coming off an idle date following a 66-41 loss to Memphis, whose Xplorers are on a 3-0 roll to start the season.

THE SERIES: Amarillo's 2005 entry in the af2 paves new ground in each game. The expansion team played in the Texas-based Intense Football League last season before gaining and receiving admittance to the better-connected af2 rather than making the move to the expanded NIFL. Not only are the Dusters a new opponent from neighboring Texas, the Amarillo squad represents a new division rival for the Battle Wings in the re-vamped National Conference Mid-West.

THE IFs: A victory by the Battle Wings would:
· Would stop Bossier's season-opening three game losing streak and an eight-game losing streak dating from last season;
· Would give "Wings their first victory in three times over one of their new division rivals;
· Give Keith Barefield his sixth career win as a head coach in the af2;
· Be the 25th victory all-time in Bossier/Shreveport af2 history.

HEAD COACHES: Bossier boss Keith Barefield has been scratching his head, trying to figure out why his team isn't at least 2-1 after the first three games of the '05 slate. Turnovers and penalties have been a big key, but the second-year skipper says there's nothing wrong with his team that a minor rattling of cages and a "W" won't cure...The Dusters' Warren McCarty had to feel good after that last-gasp, season-opening victory at home against Tulsa, but the Memphis Xplorers, ranked second in the league in last week's poll, burst the bubble of High Plains arena fans with a 66-41 thrashing of the Dusters.

LAST SERIES MEETING: The next time these two teams play - June 25 in Amarillo - will be the first time there is a "last meeting" or "last series" to discuss. Packed together in the National Conference' Mid-West Division, every game between the two clubs automatically take on more import.

BAREFIELD BITES:

Battle Wings head coach Keith Barefield on three-game losing streak to start season:: "Obviously, we're disappointed to be 0-3 when we feel like we could be 2-1 right now. There's not a lot separating us from that winning record right now. I think that first win - elusive as it has been - will go a long way toward curing our ills."
Barefield on the loss to Quad City: "That was a second tough loss for us. It's hard to look at those zeroes in the second half. We missed some breaks, we made some breaks, and we didn't capitalize on them. It's not as though we've been playing bad teams by any stretch. We're playing with good teams. We just haven't beaten them yet."
Barefield on thetrade of All-af2 QB Tim Hicks to the team on Tuesday: "We're pretty happy.....To have ben in a situation where an athlete like him, much less a quarterback with his cerdentials, wanted to come down here to play. We're more than happy to accomodate the man."
Barefield on the Amarillo Dusters: "Obviously, there's not a lot we know about them, but it's pretty clear they have enough talent to beat the likes of Tulsa. We're certainly in no position to take any one team lightly under any conditions. We need to get a win."

DROPBACK: Bossier/Shreveport was on top of Quad City at the half, 29-27, but failed for the second time in three games to put any points on the board in the second half. Bo Smith caught all four TD passes from Caleb Slover, matching his career high in receiving yards (155) on eight catches. The "BOssier Bullet" also became the Battle Wings' all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 43, passing Kevin Stevenson (41). He also moved into second-place all-time in receiving yards and is within 500 yards of taking over the #1 spot in that category...

A LITTLE MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL NEXT?: The Battle Wings head back on the road next week, making their first trip ever to Hidalgo, TX for a match with the re-vamped Rio Grande Valley Dorados. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, but a scheduling conflict at Dodge Arena forced the move to Monday night. RGV lost its first two games of the season, 56-42 at home to Louisville and 63-30 at Florida.
