Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs completed a trade on Wednesday, acquiring forward Mark Johnson from the Odessa Jackalopes in exchange for future considerations. Johnson will join the Mudbugs immediately and will be eligible to play for the team in this weekend's games.

"Mark is a player who will bring size and toughness to our lineup," said Head Coach Scott Muscutt. "He finishes big hits and opens up ice for his teammates out there, but he's also got some skill and a great shot to go along with that."

The 23-year-old Johnson is currently in his third professional season, having spent the past two years in the Central Hockey League as well. After playing a season of Major Junior for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League in 2005-06, Johnson joined the Youngstown SteelHounds as a rookie in 06-07. He finished that season with 16 points (7g, 9a) and 112 penalty minutes in 57 games, adding another point and six more PIMS in six playoff games.

"He really caught our attention a couple years ago in a game against Youngstown," Muscutt explains. "He scored a great goal on a breakaway and then went out and fought Chris Brassard on the next shift. Those are the kinds of things we hope he can do for us as well."

Johnson had 10 points in 32 games for Youngstown last season before being traded to Odessa on February 11, 2008. He spent the last 19 games of the season with the Jackalopes, recording six points and adding a goal in the playoffs. In seven games with Odessa this season, Johnson had one shorthanded goal, a +1 rating, four penalty minutes and 14 shots on goal.

"We felt we needed another experienced defenseman," Odessa Head Coach Paul Gillis said in a team press release. "So we needed to open a roster spot. We think the world of Mark and are sorry to lose him but in the best interest of the team we had to make a move."
