Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Brazos Valley Bombers traveled to San Antonio Tuesday night to take on the Flying Chanclas where the team added a win to their resume, bringing the team's resume to 9-10.
The Bombers went into San Antonio with business to take care of. The team has struggled in the past games, but tonight the Brazos Valley head coach James Dillard and the Bombers showcased their desire to win and their championship spirit.
"We expect to win because we are the Bombers," Dillard said. "But most importantly, we're here to have fun."
The night began as Trevis Sundgren made his first start in a Bombers uniform, retiring six of the first eight batters faced. Sundgren recorded two strikeouts while pitching two and a third innings. The Bombers pitching rotation also included Isaac Crab from Wabash Community College, Dyan Johnson from Lamar University, Zach Poe from Tarleton State and, to close out, Grant Wood from Blinn College.
The Bombers took the lead early in the third inning as second baseman Daniel Altman drove in outfielder Chris Shull on a sacrifice RBI, and catcher Ryan Snell crossed home on a wild pitch to bring the score to 2-0.
San Antonio responded quickly throughout the night. At the end of third, the Flying Chanclas brought in two runs, then followed up in the fourth inning by racking up two more, bringing the score to 3-4 as the Bombers were eager to take the field.
The Bombers responded at the top of the fifth inning when an error made by the Flying Chanclas brought the score to 3-4 as Shull crossed the plate. Center fielder Grayson Tatrow delivered an RBI single, tying the game at 4-4. Following Tatrow, Brazos Valley shortstop Bobby Lada and third baseman Troy Viola delivered RBI base hits as the Bombers took a 6-4 lead.
As the ninth inning began, the Bombers did not let up on the gas. First baseman Shelby Becker led off the ninth with a base hit, then proceeded to steal second a couple of pitches later. Although Becker was left on base, Wood took care of business with the Flying Chanclas batting rotation, setting the final score at 6-4.
A few Bombers stood out in San Antonio and were crucial to the teams' win tonight. Johnson led the attack on the mound as he pitched three and two thirds scoreless innings, striking out seven batters and giving up just three hits. Secondly, Tatrow at the plate for the Bombers recording three hits and an RBI. Lastly, player of the game, Johnson with 4 innings pitched, 3 hits, 0 run and walks and 6 strikeouts.
The Bombers will face the Flying Chanclas Wednesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 24, with first pitches set for 7:05 p.m. each night. Brazos Valley will then return to Edible Field on Friday, June 25 to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters for a two-game series. Fans can expect a night of fun and entertainment, capped off with a world-famous fireworks show.
