Bombers' Happy Gilmore Night Lights the Sky with Firework Showing

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Brazos Valley Bombers fell 8-0 to the San Antonio Flying Chanclas Saturday in an entertainment-filled night at the ballpark.

The Bombers struggled offensively, managing only five hits across the nine innings on their march to the team's fourth loss in five games. Fans in attendance, however, had no trouble recording hits as they competed in a Longest Drive competition on Edible Field, among other Happy Gilmore-related festivities celebrating the iconic movie's 25th Anniversary. A brilliant fireworks show, normally reserved for Fridays at the ballpark, topped off an exhilarating ballpark experience unlike any other.

Brazos Valley head coach James Dillard said the team needs to reevaluate its strategy at the plate to get out of its hitting slump.

"We just have to take a better approach," Dillard said. "Our guys are Division I athletes; they're good. We just need to get things going."

Not wanting to give up the lead for the second time in the series, the Flying Chanclas managed to plate a runner in the first with a blooper single just out of reach of jumping Bombers shortstop Bobby Lada. Two runners in scoring position threatened more damage, but a clutch inning-ending strikeout by pitcher Jace Hutchins stopped the bleeding. A throwing error in the third scored one more, doubling the visiting team's run count.

A rough sixth inning saw San Antonio load the bases with zero outs on the board. However, they only managed two bring two runners home, setting the score at 0-4, before the Bombers escaped the half. Four more runs were then added to the Flying Chanclas' resume across the tops of the eighth and ninth.

For the second time this series, the Brazos Valley bullpen struck out double-digit batters. Hutchins led the night with four, with Zach Poe, Isaac Crab, Grant Wood and Brandon Hendrix not far behind.

After Saturday's closer, Brazos Valley falls to a 7-10 record while San Antonio continues its league-leading dominance, soaring to 12-2 on the season.

The Bombers return to action Sunday, June 20 as they travel to Victoria, Texas to face the team's rivals, the Victoria Generals. After the one-off Sunday, Brazos Valley will make the trek to San Antonio for a three-game series against the recently-battled Flying Chanclas.

Dillard said he hopes the team can use the long time away as an opportunity to get things back on track.

"We need to figure it out at the plate," Dillard said. "When you do that, you're going to win a lot of baseball games. That's it."
