Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
Bryan-College Station, TX (July 15, 2014) - The Brazos Valley Bombers (27-10) fell to the Victoria Generals (29-10) 3-2 on Tuesday and slipped to second place in the second half of the season.
The Bombers were the first to draw blood in the game, but it was Victoria who won the battle, scoring three runs in their final three at bats.
"We didn't capitalize on opportunities we had and [the Generals] won it there late," said head coach Curt Dixon when asked about the game's outcome.
Texas Aggie and third baseman Logan Nottebrok had a good night at the plate, taking credit for both the Bombers runs for the night. A base hit in his first at bat brought lead -off man and shortstop Horacio Correa III home. Nottebrok went on to smash a home run out of the park in the third inning for the Bombers second run.
Several Bombers made it out of the batter's box in the final six innings, but were unable to score. The Generals would go on to take the game, thanks to two home runs by right fielder Matthew Burks, one each in the sixth and eighth inning, and an RBI double for infielder Pedro Barrios.
"We had guys on and we didn't execute. Then striking out with guys in scoring position like that, it can't happen," Dixon said. He did go on to complement the pitching staff, saying, "I give those starting pitchers credit. They did a good job keeping everyone off balance. Heston Van Fleet did a really good job for us in his first start of the year."
Bombers pitcher Heston Van Fleet made a great showing in his six innings on the mound, with 2 strikeouts and a 1.13 ERA. Jake McDavid and Nick Johnson stepped out of the bullpen for the final three innings. McDavid added two strikeouts to the books, but Johnson took the loss for the night with only two-thirds of an inning under his belt.
The Bombers will face the Victoria Generals again on Wednesday at Riverside Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
