Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

Youngsville, LA - The Brazos Valley Bombers opened the 2019 season with a win on the road in Youngsville, Louisiana against the Acadiana Cane Cutters.

The Bombers and Cane Cutters suffered a brief weather delay Friday night before getting underway just before 7:30. College Station native Reece Easterling got the nod as starting pitcher for the Bombers opener.

Cordell Bowie, designated hitter for the Cane Cutters, drove in a run to put the Cane Cutters up early in the ballgame, but the Bombers were able to capitalize on their roster's strong batting depth and jump out to a 2-1 lead in the third. Cole Coker and Bryant Shellenbarger were both able to drive in runs for the Bombers.

Henry Bird came in relief of Easterling in the bottom of the fourth and delivered the first strikeout of the game for the Bombers. Bird would go on to record three strikeouts and did not allow a hit through the sixth inning before being replaced by lefty Dontae Woodard in the top of the seventh.

The Cane Cutters' Fisher Norris was able to tie things up on a ground-out and shattered bat by Reed Spenrath in the seventh, but the Bombers bounced back in the ninth. A ground-rule double from Chase Kemp put Jacob Padilla in scoring position, and Padilla was able to score on a wild pitch to put the Bombers up 3-2.

Zach DeLeon closed out the game on the mound for Brazos Valley.

The Bombers go up 1-0 on the season, and the Cane Cutters fall to 0-3 after losses to the Victoria Generals.

The Bombers will finish their opening series against the Cane Cutters on the road on Saturday. The Louisiana road trip will continue into Monday with a pair of games against the Baton Rouge Rougarou in their inaugural season in the Texas Collegiate League.
