Bombers Clinch Playoff Berth in 8-4 Come-From-Behind Win over Rex

Dubois County Bombers News Release

Tanner Glore flailed futilely at a 3-2, two-out Nick Green fastball in the top of the ninth to conclude an 8-4 Dubois County Bombers win over the Terre Haute Rex Wednesday night at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.

The victory improved the Bombers' record to 19-7 and, more importantly, secured a berth to a divisional playoff game that will now be held August 7 at League Stadium. The Bombers' opponent will be determined at the end of the season.

Nick Smart (3-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning in a game that saw both starters gone by the end of the seventh.

He replaced Alex Britt, who labored through seven innings and threw 135 pitches. Britt allowed three runs, two earned, on eleven hits and six walks while striking out only two. But he made timely pitches, and his defense bailed him out.

The same cannot be said for the Rex, who allowed only two earned runs. Starter Tommy Strunc went six and two-thirds innings, yielding three runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks. He also struck out six.

Nick Cunningham (0-1) relieved Strunc to get the final out of the seventh and the first two of the eighth, but he took the loss as he allowed five runs, only one of which was earned.

Dubois County opened the scoring when Scott Windler walked, advanced to third on a Kolin Conner single and scored on an Austin Nyman single up the middle.

Terre Haute's shoddy defense made its first costly mistake in the third. Frank Rawdow reached on an error by third baseman Nick Johnson and scored when shortstop Spencer Mahoney booted a Cody Daily grounder. 2-0, Bombers.

The Rex would tie it with a pair in the top of the fourth, however. Mahoney led off the inning with a solo home run, and Edmund Cheatham followed with a single.

Cheatham advanced to second on a sacrifice then reached third when a pickoff attempt from Bombers catcher Kolin Conner caromed into right field. He scored on a Jacob Hayes sacrifice fly.

Terre Haute took the lead in the top of the fifth as Kyle Zimmerman reached with a two-out single and scored two batters later when Cheatham singled to left. 3-2, Rex.

Dubois County took advantage of another Terre Haute gift to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Austin Nyman led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Landon Curry. Nyman then stole third, but Bo Ausmus struck out. After intentionally walking Dalton Rouleau, the Rex made the change from Strunc to Cunningham and up stepped Rawdow.

For the second time in six innings, Johnson bobbled a Rawdow grounder, and Nyman scored the Bombers' third run.

Terre Haute's final error proved to be the most crucial.

Mahoney booted another Daily grounder to lead off the bottom of the inning. Daily advanced to third on a wild pitch to Conner, who walked, and Austin Nyman followed with a bunt single that knocked in Daily. 4-3, Bombers.

Curry then dropped a fly ball into left-center field to knock in Conner. 5-3, Bombers.

Bo Ausmus popped up to second, and Terre Haute intentionally walked Rouleau to load the bases. Cunningham promptly plunked Rawdow with his next pitch to drive in Nyman. 6-3 Bombers.

Jeff Zahn, hitherto hitless on the night and in a bit of a slump, followed with a two-run single to push Dubois County's lead to 8-3.

Nick Blount retired Daily for the final out of the Bombers' eighth

Green allowed a solo home run to Nick Johnson before striking out the next three Rex, the last of whom was pinch hitter Tanner Glore.

The Bombers plays the Dans in Danville, Ind., Thursday night at 7:30. The Rex, now 14-12, play the Cavemen in Hannibal, Mo.
