"Bolts for Books" to Strike Polk County Schools
April 18, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Lakeland ThunderBolts News Release
LAKELAND- Reading is an important part of every day life, and the Lakeland ThunderBolts want to reinforce to children that reading and school are both important. The ThunderBolts are doing this by the implantation of the "Bolts for Books" Reading Program in conjunction with local elementary schools here in Lakeland.
So how does the ThunderBolts "Bolts for Books" Reading Program work? To get the kids started the Lakeland ThunderBolts players will choose a book from the second grade reading list and read that book to the class. The teacher will set up the requirements for the number of points or books that need to be read in a two-week period. The "Bolts for Books" Reading Program is entirely voluntary and no student has to participate. However, for those who choose to participate in the "Bolts for Books" Reading Program and reach the set goal, their reward will be two (2) free Lakeland ThunderBolts, that can be used at any time during the regular season. Once the reading is done the players will have time to answer any questions the children might have for them. Also they will all receive a goodie bag and a team photo for the players to autograph.
The "Bolts for Books" Reading Program this year will take place in eleven different elementary schools around the Lakeland area. The ThunderBolts contacted the Polk County School Board about setting up an incentive program for reading. This year the ThunderBolts choose second grade for the "Bolts for Books" Reading Program, but each year they will choose different grades so that everyone can take part in the program.
"The ThunderBolts "Bolts for Books" Reading Program is a great way for students to see professional athletes in a different light," stated General Manager Larry Kiernan. " As much as the kids look forward to meeting and interacting with the players, the players also have the chance to meet and greet and read to the young fans."
The ThunderBolts are at home again April 29 vs. Fayetteville Guard. Kick off is at 7pm at the Lakeland Center. Season Tickets and Mini Flex Plans are still available for the ThunderBolts second season of professional indoor football. Single game tickets are now available at the Lakeland Center Box Office 863.834.8111 or at any Ticketmaster location 863.682.5300. All home games are played at the Lakeland Center.
