Last week the Lakeland Thunderbolts defeated the Carolina Speed 54-32 to move one step closer to the American Indoor Football Association Championship game. Lakeland (13-2) will face the Mississippi Mudcats (12-3) for the AIFA Conference Championship tonight, June 18th at the Lakeland Center. This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season. The Thunderbolts lost to the Mudcats in their opening game 46-38 then defeated them 54-31 in May. Brian Brents the Mudcat head coach is the former offensive coordinator for the Thunderbolts. "Coach Brents and I are good friends and have worked together for years. I was very happy when he stepped up and became a head coach. He will have the advantage of knowing the inside of my coaching style" head coach Teddy Keaton said. "It will be a tight, exciting game. With a trip to the championship on the line neither team will be holding anything back" Keaton said.

Mississippi dominated Tallahassee from the start Sunday defeating the Titans 62-32 in Tupelo. Quarterback Tommy Jones had six touchdown passes including three to wide receiver Josh Smith in the second half. The Mudcats scored on each of the Titan first half turnovers. The big play of the night was a pass to 300 plus pound Maurice Dixon who barreled across the line for a touchdown. Dixon an offensive lineman occasionally plays fullback and has scored twice this season.

"We knew from the start of the season we would be the two teams fighting for a spot in the championship game" Keaton said. "Both teams are well coached, talented and disciplined. It is going to be an outstanding game. The winner will be decided by who makes the least mistakes. We need to step it up and come out strong from the start against Mississippi" Keaton said. The winner of tonight's game heads to the AIFA Championship in Florence, South Carolina on June 23rd.
