Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 29, 2008) -- A Milwaukee product through and through, Steve Bode of UW-Milwaukee was the territorial selection of the Milwaukee Wave in the 2008 MISL College Draft on Tuesday. Bode was among three Wisconsin players chosen in the five-round draft, along with UW-Parkside's Bojan Jovicic and UW-Milwaukee's Tenzin Rampa, who is a member of the Wave Armada developmental squad. Bode, a defender who captained the Panthers for three seasons, attended Marquette University High School before UW-Milwaukee. He recalled attending Wave games and Wave Summer Soccer Camps as a youth. "Larry Sunderland stands out to me (as a coach)," Bode said of those camp experiences. "He had long, blond hair; that's probably why I remember him the most." He was drafted by the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer in the fourth round and will attend training camp in Florida beginning next week. Though he is striving for MLS, he's excited about the opportunities in his hometown. "It's fantastic," he said. "I feel very blessed and honored to play for this team. I've wanted to play professional soccer for 10 or 15 years, and this is fantastic." Keith Tozer, the Wave's head coach and vice president of soccer operations, was impressed with Bode's overall game. "He had a really good college career, a strong physical-type player," Tozer said. "He's classy on and off the field, and will represent the Wave well like other players in the past." Rampa has been impressive as a second forward for Coach Mark Litton's Wave Armada after playing a wing position for the Panthers. He scored two goals and had seven assists in his UWM career. "The Armada has been my gateway to the indoor game," Rampa said. "It's a lot more dynamic than I thought it was. There's a lot more structure than I thought there'd be." Rampa reminds Tozer of current Wave midfielder Marcelo Fontana, a coachable, hard-working player with good speed and quickness. Other Wave choices on Monday included: Bojan Jovicic, forward, UW-Parkside: Jovicic was an NCAA Division II All-American and the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2006. Scored 33 goals and added 34 assists in 72 games. Danleigh Borman, midfielder, University of Rhode Island: Most Outstanding Player of 2006 Atlantic 10 Championship and second-team All-Atlantic 10 in 2007. A member of South Africa's U-19 national team at age 17. Tom Oatley, forward, Western Michigan University: Team MVP in 2007 with five goals and four assists. All-Mid American Conference second team for three seasons.
