(Bridgeport, Conn.) - Bridgeport Bluefish team officials today announced the signing of catcher Jose Gil.

"Jose is an experienced catcher from his time at the higher levels, and is familiar with this league," says Bluefish Manager Luis Rodriguez. "We're excited to have him join us at this point in the season."

Jose Gil comes to Bridgeport for his 12th season of professional baseball and second in the Atlantic League. Last year, the catcher played for Camden, then a fellow Atlantic League rival of the Bluefish. There, he collected a .242 batting average with five home runs, 21 RBI and 28 runs scored. On September 1, 2015, his contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and he was assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League where he played four games. The 29-year-old began his professional career in 2005 after being signed by the New York Yankees as an undrafted free agent. He spent his first 10 seasons with the Yankees organization, besides in 2013 when he briefly appeared with two teams in the Baltimore Orioles organization as well as Lincoln of the independent American Association before rejoining the Yankees. Gil has played at the Triple-A Level every year since 2011. In 662 career minor league games, Jose owns a .237 batting average with 46 home runs, 269 RBI, and 245 runs scored.
