Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (14-7, 40-51) defeated the Long Island Ducks (8-13, 54-37) 6-4 in the opener of a four-game weekend wraparound series at Bethpage Ballpark. The Bluefish close out the month of July with 16 wins and regain sole possession of first place in the Second Half Liberty Division Standings by one half game over the Somerset Patriots.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Kameron Loe (4-2) earned up the win, tossing seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned runs) on seven hits, walking two and striking out two. Long Island Starting Pitcher John Brownell picked up a no-decision, pitching seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out six, and surrendering two home runs. Amalio Diaz (1-2) suffered the loss out of the bullpen for the Ducks after allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out one while facing six batters. Patrick Mincey pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 19th save. The All-Star closer is now a perfect 11 for 11 in save opportunities in the second half of the season.

Long Island took the early 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the third inning off Loe on back to back run scoring singles by Dan Lyons and Delta Cleary Jr., plating Jon Griffin and Mike Blanke who reached on base knocks of their own to start the frame. Bridgeport answered right back in the top of fourth inning off Brownell when Sean Burroughs launched a two-out game tying two-run home run, the second roundtripper in 2015 for the 14 year veteran, and the game was all even at 2-2.

The Ducks took their second lead of the night in the fifth inning, scoring two more runs off Loe. A sacrifice fly by Dan Lyons brought in Blanke to make it 3-2 in favor of the flock, and Welington Dotel airmailed the throw to third base as Blake Davis was tagging up from second as the ball landed in the seats for a throwing error, allowing Davis to trot home to give the Ducks their second two-run cushion of the night at 4-2. Again the 'Fish responded in the top of the sixth as Burroughs blasted his second two-run homer of the night off Brownell, and the game was tied at 4-4. Brownell has now allowed 12 home runs on the season, most in the Atlantic League.

The game was now a battle of the bullpens, and Bridgeport took their first lead of the night in the top of the eighth inning off Diaz. Alonso and Jobduan Morales began the rally with back to back singles, but as Alonso went first to third Morales tried to take the extra base and was thrown out at second for the first out. Burroughs was intentionally walked to put runners at the corners, and Wilson Batista brought Alonso home with a go-ahead RBI single, as Bridgeport now led 5-4. Looking for insurance, Bryant Nelson responded against his former team belting a solo shot in the ninth inning off Nick Struck, his second big fly as a member of the Bluefish. Mincey shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, and Bridgeport had their fourth consecutive victory over their cross-sound rival. The 'Fish hit three home runs in the win, matching their most in a single game since the feat took place on June 26th at York against the Revolution. Bridgeport also collected 12 hits on the evening, marking the 33rd time this year that they have registered ten hits or more in a single game. Nelson, Dotel, Alonso, Morales, and Burroughs led offensive attack for the Bluefish with a pair of hits each.
