Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, Conn., May 16, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish won their third consecutive game en route to reaching the .500-mark for the first time this season by defeating the Nashua Pride, 1-0 , on Friday evening before 2,096 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Bridgeport's first shutout victory of the season was tossed by Alex Lontayo (2-1) in his team's complete game of the season. Lontayo held the Pride to four hits, striking out seven batters while only walking two.
The Bluefish bats started swinging early when Jose Offerman, a two-time Major League All-Star, hit his first homerun, a solo shot over the left field wall giving Bridgeport the 1-0 lead. The biggest threat to the Bluefish lead came in the fourth inning when Nashua's Curtis Pride hit a long fly ball to right field that was hauled in by an over the shoulder catch by Ben Candelaria. The Bluefish were unable to capitalize on three consecutive singles in the bottom of the fourth inning as Candelaria was tagged out at home on a throw by Nashua's Pat Howell to end the inning.
Former Bridgeport Bluefish and Cheshire, Conn. native Brian Looney (2-1) took the loss for the Pride after pitching seven innings while allowing just one run on four hits (4K).
With the win the Bluefish improve to 7-7 on the season while Nashua falls to 8-6. On Saturday the Bridgeport Bluefish will continue their weekend series against the Nashua Pride. RHP Brady Raggio (1-1, 5.91) will take the mound for the Bluefish opposing Nashua's RHP Archie Corbin, (1-0, 2.79).
