New York Bluefins News Release

Hyannis, MA - The Cape Cod Bluefins stepped onto the ice at Hyannis Youth and Community Center to face the 1000 Islands Privateers tonight. In a game that featured a furiously fast pace of action, the Bluefins stuck with the Privateers all night, until the 3rd period when an atypical play netted the game winning goal for the Privateers.

After a scoreless 1st period where there was a combined 33 shots on goal and a few breakaways on both ends, Privateers forward Matt Kinnunen broke the scoreless tie at 6:37 of the 2nd period with assists from Brad Smulders and Chad Bazin. After Chase Tippin took a boarding call, Cape Cod's Dan Gordon capitalized on the Bluefins only power play of the night at the 9:02 mark from Garrett Peters and Anthony to tie the game at 1 after 2 periods of play.

1000 Islands came out strong to start the 3rd period, netting an early goal just 58 seconds in when Justin Levac fired a shot into the net to make it 2 to 1. Anthony Sarno would then retie the score at the 8:58 mark with a blast from the point set up by David Lun. The tie didn't last long when, 13 seconds later, Tyler Fernandez put 1000 Islands back on top 3 to 2 with a point blank shot from the slot.

Less than 2 minutes later in the period, that atypical play took place when Adam McAllister took a feed from defenseman Michael Byrd and was in all alone on Bluefins goaltender Wes Vesprini, lost an edge and fell while fanning on the shot at the same time, yet from the seat of his pants sliding towards the corner put enough wood on the puck on an unbelievable 2nd effort put the puck in the net from a very wide angle to make it 4 to 2 Privateers.

Kevin McCready would make it 4 to 3 with a great effort taking the puck away from Bazin behind the Privateers net and whirling in front of the net and beating goaltender Matt Anthony at the 11:58 mark. Byrd would then close the scoring at 17:49 to make the score final at 5 to 3. Both teams tallied 44 shots on goal. Matt Anthony stopped 41 shots to garner the win. Wes Vesprini stopped 39 in the loss.

The Cape Cod Bluefins are on the road for the next 3 games, all in Danbury beginning tomorrow night at 7:30 at Danbury Ice Arena in what will be the FHL Game of the Week. The Blufins next home game is Friday, December 9th against the Akwesasne Warriors at 7:05pm. Great seats are still available.
