Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Lakewood, N.J. - The Hudson Valley Renegades were swept in a doubleheader by the Jersey Shore BlueClaws on Saturday night at ShoreTown Ballpark. They lost the first game 8-2 and fell in the second 2-0.
The Renegades have now been swept in four consecutive doubleheaders, and have lost nine straight games in twin bills, dating back to May 8.
Josue Panacual struggled in the opener, allowing three runs in the bottom of the first and a leadoff home run to Marcus Lee Sang in the second to stake the BlueClaws to an early 4-0 lead.
Jersey Shore added two more in the fourth on a Luis Garcia two-run homer off Panacual (2-4), who allowed six runs on nine hits in three-plus innings, walking two and striking out three. Charlie Ruegger allowed a two-run homer to Lee Sang in the fifth grow the deficit to 8-0.
Mick Abel (7-7) tossed six shutout innings for the BlueClaws, but Erubiel Armenta allowed a towering two-run home run to Jasson Dominguez in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-2. Dominguez finished game one 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Matt Sauer and Andrew Painter battled in a fierce pitcher's duel. The contest was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, when Jersey Shore scratched out a run on a Casey Martin RBI single.
Sauer (5-3) had a great outing on the mound despite the loss. He fired the first complete game of his career, tossing all six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking two (one intentional) and striking out five.
With his strikeout of Arturo De Freitas in the bottom of the fourth, Sauer became the Renegades all-time strikeout king, surpassing Rich Dorman's record of 148 set in 2001.
Jersey Shore tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to add some insurance, but Painter (2-0) wouldn't need it as he retired the final seven batters he faced for a two-hit complete game shutout.
The Renegades complete their series with the BlueClaws on Sunday afternoon at ShoreTown Ballpark. RHP Blane Abeyta (4-7, 4.58) gets the start for Hudson Valley, while Jersey Shore sends LHP Scott Moss (MiLB rehab) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m., with pregame coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network starting at 12:45.
