Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats are pleased to announce that three football players have been recognized by the league for their performance last week in the BlueCats 51-45 victory over the Ohio Valley Greyhounds. Quarterback Haven Mosley has been named UIF Offensive Player of the Week, Richard Johnson has been named UIF Special Teams Player of the Week, and defensive back Choo Choo Davis has been recognized as the UIF Defensive Player of the Week "Honorable Mention" for Week 6.
Evansville BlueCats Head Coach John Hart said, "All of our players have been working tremendously hard this season and it's good to see our guys get the recognition they deserve. Haven had an outstanding game with his 5 touchdowns and really did a nice job leading our offense. Richard is an incredible player who can play anywhere on the field and he's played at an All-Star level in every spot we've put him. And Choo Choo has been making big plays all season and he forced another big turnover in the game last week. I couldn't be happier for these guys."
Quarterback Haven Mosley had a break out game against the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, leading the BlueCats offense to a season high 51 points. He completed 18 of his 25 passes for 259 yards and 4 touchdowns in his third game as the BlueCats starter. Mosley distributed his 4 touchdown passes to 4 different receivers and also rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown against the Greyhounds. He's the first BlueCats player to be named UIF Offensive Player of the Week since former BlueCats quarterback Ramon Robinson, who also received the honor in Week 11 of the 2005 season.
The Week 6 Awards mark the fourth week in a row (a new league record) that an Evansville BlueCats player has been named as UIF Special Teams Player of the Week. It's also the third time in the last 4 weeks that Richard Johnson has earned Special Teams Player of the Week. Last week against Ohio Valley, Richard nearly returned another kickoff for a touchdown in the second quarter before being tripped up from behind. Ohio Valley sent most of their kickoffs out of bounds in an attempt to keep the ball away from the BlueCats dangerous kick return duo of Johnson and teammate Odest Shannon. Against the Greyhounds, Richard also caught 3 passes for 46 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown catch, and made one solo tackle. The touchdown reception means that Richard Johnson has now scored a touchdown in 4 different ways, becoming the first player in BlueCats history to pass for a touchdown, rush for a touchdown, return a kick for a touchdown, and make a touchdown reception in the same season. It only took him 6 games to accomplish this. So far this season he's made 2 touchdown passes, 2 rushing touchdowns, 2 kick return touchdowns, and one touchdown reception.
Also being recognized by the league this week is BlueCats defensive back Choo Choo Davis. This is the second week in a row that Davis has received the UIF Defensive Player of the Week "Honorable Mention" honor. Last week against Ohio Valley, Davis made 4.5 tackles, broke up 4 passes, and forced the decisive fumble in the final minute of the game to help seal the BlueCats victory. Choo Choo Davis currently ranks 3rd on the team with 20 total tackles. He leads the team with 5 pass breaks ups and also leads the team and ranks second overall in the league with 4 interceptions through the first 6 games of the season.
Other players receiving league awards for Week 6 were Billings defensive lineman Michael Bazemore (Defensive Player of the Week), Bloomington wide receiver Glenn Johnson (Offensive "Honorable Mention"), and Bloomington defensive back Dorian Pitts (Special Teams "Honorable Mention").
Since the UIF was formed in 2005, no other team in the UIF has had more players earn more Player of the Week awards than the Evansville BlueCats.
The BlueCats will enjoy a bye week in Week 7. The Evansville BlueCats will return to action on Sunday, May 13th, when they travel to take on the Omaha Beef in a Mother's Day showdown! This game can be heard on News-Talk 1280 WGBF-AM or on the web at www.103gbfrocks.com. Kickoff in Omaha is scheduled for 3:30pm.
