Mississippi Braves News Release

PENSACOLA, FL - For the second straight night, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (8-5, 46-37) shut out the Mississippi Braves (6-7, 39-43) at Blue Wahoos Stadium, 1-0. The third-straight loss to the Wahoos and fourth-straight overall hands the M-Braves its first series loss of the second half.

The loss on the mound went to 22-year-old Jasseel De La Cruz (L, 1-4), despite his fifth quality start in eight outings (seven starts). The Dominican right-hander allowed just one run on five hits over 6.0 innings with two walks and six strikeouts. De La Cruz has gone at least six innings in four-straight starts but has gotten just three runs of support in those games.

Pensacola plated their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ninth-place hitter Michael Davis hit a triple that scooted to the center field wall and then he scored on a sacrifice fly by Lewin Diaz. De La Cruz worked around a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, collecting back-to-back strikeouts. At one point De La Cruz retired eight of nine batters.

Charlie Barnes (W, 1-2) picked up his first Double-A win on Tuesday and dazzled over 7.0 innings of two-hit baseball for Pensacola. The Braves threatened only twice against the southpaw. William Contreras and Greyson Jenista hit back-to-back singles to begin the second inning, but a double play halted the momentum. They would not allow another hit after the second inning. He walked Drew Waters and Cristian Pache with one out in the sixth inning but escaped with a pair of fly outs.

The Braves left four runners on base and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Pensacola shut out Mississippi over two straight games, May 8-9 at Trustmark Park, the only other time its happened this season.

Claudio Custodio tossed the final 2.0 innings behind De La Cruz and struck out two to continue his impressive season on the mound. The former Yankees infielder has given up just one run over his last nine outings, and 15 innings pitched, lowering his season-ERA to 2.55 over 17 appearances. Adam Bray (S, 1) retired the final six batters to secure his first save of 2019.

The Blue Wahoos have won five-straight games to take over first place in the South Division second-half standings.

The M-Braves will try to avoid a sweep on Wednesday night in the fourth game of the four-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium. RHP Ian Anderson (6-5, 2.94) makes his first start since the combined no-hitter for the M-Braves against RHP Jorge Alcala (5-5, 5.81) for Penscaola. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm with coverage beginning at 6:20 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio and MiLB.tv (subscription required).

The Braves return to Trustmark Park for a six-game series against the Biloxi Shuckers and Independence Day Celebration. The series begins with a Supersized Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza following the 6:35 pm July 4 contest on Thursday. Visit mississippibraves.com for tickets or call 888-BRAVES4.

The Mississippi Braves are the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since the inaugural 2005 season, 139 M-Braves have gone on to Major League Baseball. The M-Braves have made postseason play four times and went on to win the Southern League Championship in 2008. Stop by Trustmark Park or call 888-BRAVES4 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
