Blue Sox rally from five down to beat Jamestown 9-8

UTICA: The Utica Blue Sox beat the team with the best record in the PGCBL, Jamestown Jammers, 9-8 and head into the All-Star break with a 19-17 record.

Utica once again trailed 7-2 heading out the top sixth.

Jamestown took the lead in the top third. Gino Tortoriello recorded the ground-rule double and advanced to third off of Rashad Stewart's single. Max Silverman load the bases after being hit by a pitch, and Tortoriello later scored after Austin Parent's walk to put the Jammers on top 1-0. Stewart also scored off of Rane Pfeifer's sacrifice fly out to put Jamestown up 2-0. Silverman later stole home plate to give the Jammers' a 3-0 advantage heading out of the top third.

Utica got on the board in the bottom third. Utica right fielder Khalyd Cox led the inning off with a triple and scored off of Cameron Phelts' sacrifice hit (Jam: 3-1).

The Jammers scored one more run in the top fourth. Alex O'Donnell advanced to first off of an error from the Blue Sox's shortstop DJ Staszak. He later moved up to second off of Brandon Nania's walk, and then scored off of Stewart's sacrifice fly-out (Jam: 4-1).

The Blue Sox did put up another run in the bottom fourth. Utica catcher Kyle Strovink singled, advanced to second off of a wild pitch, and scored off of Staszak's single.

Utica only trailed by two (4-2), but the Jammers' put up three more runs in the top sixth. Jammers' center fielder Chase Keng walked and advanced to third off of O'Donnell's double. Nania also recorded a double to bring Keng and O'Donnell home and make the score 6-2 Jammers. Nania later scored off of another error from Staszak to give Jamestown a five-run lead.

But the Blue Sox once again erased their deficit and decreased Jamestown lead by one run in the bottom sixth. Strovink led the inning off with a single. Blue Sox's leftfielder LJ Bryant and Staszak walked to load the bases, and then Strovink put up the Blue Sox's third run of the game thanks to a wild pitch (Jam: 7-3). Cox later walked to load the bases again. Still in the sixth, Utica third baseman Luis DeLeon singled to bring Bryant and Staszak home and decrease the Jammers' lead by two (Jam: 7-5). The Blue Sox tacked on one more run when Isaiah Torres singled to bring Cox home.

After trailing a majority of the game, Utica finally took the lead in the bottom seventh. Bryant and Staszak both walked, moved up one base off of a wild pitch, and scored when Cox singled (Utica: 8-7).

Jamestown evened the score 8-8 in the top eighth when Stewart walked, stole second, advanced to third off of the sacrifice hit from Jeremy Hassell, and scored off of a sacrifice fly out from Ben Livorsi.

But Utica retook the lead 9-8. Strovink singled and later scored all the way from first off of an error from the Jammers' third baseman Sterling Hayes.

Utica held onto their lead in the bottom ninth to get their second straight victory.

The Blue Sox's pitcher JT Gosweiler got the win and the save. He walked one and gave up zero hits in the bottom eighth and ninth. Strovink, on the other hand, had a great day at the plate. He recorded a team-high four hits and scored three runs tonight.

Jamestown's pitcher Zach Sanders got the loss as he struck out two, walked two, gave up two hits, and allowed one run to score in bottom seventh.

After the PGCBL All-Star Game, the Blue Sox will be on the road Thursday and Friday. They then will return home next Saturday for a double-header against their PGCBL Central foes the Watertown Rapids. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.
