Utica Blue Sox News Release

UTICA: The bats were on full display tonight as both the Diamond Dawgs and Blue Sox recorded a combined 24 hits. But Utica had a little more offensive power than Mohawk Valley, as they recorded 13 hits (two more than the Dawgs 11) and beat them 8-6 to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Blue Sox are now 16-16 this season and tied for second in the PGCBL Central Division.

The Dawgs took a 1-0 lead in the top first when Austin Pollack walked to first, stole second, and reached home plate off of Ryan Toohers' single.

The Blue Sox tied the game 1-1 in the bottom first. Utica centerfielder Cameron Phelts walked to first. Coco Hussien also walked, which moved Phelts up to second. Phelts then stole second and finally scored off of an error from the Dawgs' shortstop Joseph Castellanos.

Utica took the lead in the bottom second. The Blue Sox's designated hitter Brenton Phillips led the inning off with a single. Luis DeLeon also singled to move Phillips up to second. DJ Staszak hit a single too, and his hit brought Phillips home and give the Blue Sox a 2-1 lead. DeLeon also scored off of the sacrifice fly out from Phelts to increase Utica's lead by two (3-1).

But Mohawk Valley erased their two-run deficit and scored four runs in the top third. Castellanos walked and advanced to second when Toohers moved up to first off of an error from the Blue Sox's first baseman Neiko Ramos. Castellanos then scored off of a single from Joel Alvarez to decrease the Blue Sox's lead by one run (3-2). Mark McKenna singled and so did Stephan Furman, which brought Toohers home and tie the game 3-3. The Dawgs got back out front 4-3 when Joe Tevlin singled to bring Alvarez home. Mohawk Valley tacked on one more run in the inning when McKenna reached home plate off of a wild pitch. The Dawgs led it 5-3 heading out of the top third.

The Blue Sox put up a run in the bottom third. Utica right fielder LJ Bryant singled and later scored off of Phillips' double.

The Blue Sox trailed by one run 5-4 heading out the third, and they retook the lead in the bottom fourth. Staszak walked and scored off of a sacrifice hit by Phelts to tie the game 5-5. Isaiah Torres walked and later scored off of a single from Bryant to put the Blue Sox back out front 6-5.

Utica increased their lead in the bottom seventh. DeLeon singled, Staszak walked, and Phelts advanced to first off of the fielder's choice to load the bases. DeLeon scored thanks to the sacrifice fly out from Hussien. Torres later singled to bring Staszak home. Utica had an 8-5 lead heading out of the seventh.

Mohawk Valley scored one more run in the top eighth, but they could not tie or retake the lead in the top ninth.

Ryan Buckley was the winning pitcher for Utica striking out four, walking one, giving up two hits, and allowing no runs in three innings of work. The Blue Sox's closer JT Gosweiler got the save, as he once again retired the side in the bottom ninth.

The Blue Sox will be wearing pink jerseys for their "Pink the Park" breast cancer awareness game this Friday against Watertown. Friday's game is scheduled to start at 6:35 p.m.
